[ HELLo, buddy. You sure don't beat around the bush, huh? Akechi likes that. ]
The first three quests seem like simple tests of courage or wits to prove our worth, and their correlation to their respective color requirements seem fairly straightforward: yellow for golden, and red for the blood of a hunt.
The final quest, however, is the one that truly caught my attention. We have restored enough of this town in the past week, but I'm under the impression this isn't about the old books some people seem to have found. In this case, I believe "restoring the written word" means sharing stories of our own.
[It was rough, seeing Akechi grey and emotionless, as if whatever had taken the color from this town had gotten to him, too. (That's a thought for later.) The last time Izuku had stopped by to check on in, he'd been about the same as before. Today, though, Izuku's greeted by an Akechi whose color has been restored on the way to his house, and immediately, Izuku quickens his steps to catch up to him.]
Akechi-kun! [He really shouldn't get his hopes up when they have no idea how anything really works in this place, but he can't help it.]
[ It has been a few days since Akechi went on that forest expedition, and just as long since he last left the house, so he wasn't exactly expecting to be approached so soon, but it seems fate isn't about to give him time to process everything in his own terms. ]
You're-- [ A brief pause and he squints, trying to associate a name to this face. ] --Midoriya-kun, correct?
[ Hey, Akechi! You definitely want unannounced company over while you're a weird, gray, unfeeling husk, right? Sounds like a good time all around if you ask me! So, here's a lion, trotting over to your place with his one free arm full with a tray of goodies. All colored, too! Namely, some cooked red snapper, chopped and fresh apples, water, and some baked, thinly chopped potatoes. Chips? Not really. They weren't salted and didn't taste Great without that. (He was working with what he had, damn it.)
Regardless, he very calmly found himself at Akechi and Lupin's doorstep, only giving two knocks before he just let himself in. Rude? Probably. Did he care? Not really. ]
Ciao! I've come bearing gifts. It's food. The gift is food.
[ Once Caramia makes his way in, he will run across a very unusual sight: Akechi sitting in a chair, staring at his still closed laptop, like he had stopped somewhere in between the process of settling down and flipping it open. Like whatever little energy he had managed to gather was gone before he could put it to good use.
Oh, the fact that he is completely grayscale is probably unusual, too, just a little. Possibly a little alarming? It might be, if he could feel anything. ]
Hello. [ He can at least move his glance towards Caramia, but that's all the greeting he offers, no pleasant smiles or even a name. No emotion in his voice, either. ]
[ seeing as Akechi is his roommate - his younger roommate, no less - Lupin feels responsible for him. Not to any extreme extent, as he's clearly old enough to take care of himself, but enough to feel horribly guilty when he stumbled back to the house in a near-catatonic state and stayed that way for days. The meager amount of first aid and medical knowledge he had didn't seem to do anything for the poor boy. So he's resigned himself to doing the next best thing - making sure he's fed and resting as much as possible. And hoping things get better.
It's not clear what happened to him. But Lupin's seen enough people with those dark, dead eyes laying alone on the streets of the slums, and though he never said as much to anyone, he wasn't feeling particularly hopeful about his recovery. Which makes it all the more surprising when he walks in one day with a glass of water and something warm to eat and sees him actually up and about. ]
[ In all honesty, Akechi has just barely woken up to the realization that his color was back - not only that, but his feelings, too. And boy, did he have a lot of them. He was angry at this place, the shadows, and at himself for having been so weak, confused as to why that guy had been his weakness, and quite frankly still reeling in from the aftereffects of having essentially functioned on autopilot for the last three days or so - had it really only been three days?
He was overwhelmed, too, by how many people had shown him seemingly disinterested kindness since his downfall; Lupin was just one of them. He doesn't get, can't process it or even figure out what to make of it. But it seems he can't stay holed up in room trying to think this through anymore, huh? ]
Good morning, Lupin-san. [ He offers, slowly slipping back into his pleasant persona, his crutch. ] It... seems I am back to normal, yes. I'm just as surprised as you are.
[ She's here, she's... she's here, no colourful language will be used.
That is, Haru is circling the Ruga district, still uncomfortably damp from the ceaseless rain. It's dripped down the back of her coat by this point, flattened her hair into an unpleasing basket of frizzed curls, formerly fluffy but now lifeless. Her cheeks are rosy with chill. ]
Akechi-kun?
[ She blinks over at him and - oh. Right. ]
Oh, I'm sorry. How informal of me. We haven't been properly introduced, have we?
[ Though he isn't formally in any of the patrol teams, Akechi had decided to be his usual Pleasant Boy self and try to assist the newcomers as soon as he heard the news of their arrival. Who knows, perhaps he would get the chance to investigate this place further, find out any new clues, and get that little bit closer to the truth.
What he wasn't expecting to find, though, was the previously fluffy-haired Persona-user, looking a bit like a wet poodle. ]
Okumura-san...?
[ But... what was this about not having been formally introduced? They were part of the same team... weren't they? Well. That's one more thing to leave aside, for now. ]
[ This had been a difficult week for Akechi. Lupin probably knows that better than anyone in Chroma right now; every day, he'd had to watch him go back and forth between grieving and raging, albeit in his quiet, slightly unnerving way. Part of him thinks he shouldn't be surprised - Akechi spent so much time trying to smile through everything and be reliable for everybody that it was only a matter of time before the town wore him down. But even knowing that, it bothers him. There's something a bit sharper and darker about Akechi's emotional turmoil than he expected.
Eventually, they do find everyone and get them back safe and sound. He's still feeling a little woozy - it had been a difficult week for Lupin, too, to say the least - but he goes and has all his reunions, and gives Akechi plenty of space to have his own, too. It's not until that evening that Lupin approaches him properly, gently knocking at his door once the sun has set. ]
[ Calling it a difficult week would, in fact, be an understatement.
The illness had been the least of his concerns; it was a nuisance, all right, but nothing he couldn't deal with, and other people surely seemed to have it a lot worse than he ever did, anyway. The actual disappearances, however, and the whirlwind of emotions that naturally followed, that had been his downfall.
Rage, he could easily recognize-- it was his one lifelong companion through his years, after all. Grieving, he had only felt once back home, and then one more time, ever since coming to this strange land. But everything else? The powerlessness, the anguish over not knowing, the worry... the knowledge that it all came from a place of caring. It was all as new as it was near incapacitating.
(It made him remember, too, what it felt like to be scared.)
But everyone has been found and rescued safely now, so Akechi has been trying to push those thoughts to the back of his mind, get his well earned rest for the night. And just as he's pulling up the covers on his bed, he hears knocking on the door. ]
Yes. Come in.
[ Guess his rest will have to wait a little longer. ]
[How many flower crowns has Ochako made by now? It is a mystery. She's given one to almost every single person she knows, but she has yet to spot Akechi wandering by the garden while she's practicing her craft. But that isn't a problem! If he won't come to her, then hey, she'll just come to him.
So hello, buddy! She's standing on your doorstep, having knocked on your door before quickly hiding her hands behind her back. It looks like she has yet another surprise for him...]
[ And Akechi can actually see through his act so it's... cute. Really cute. Be still, his heart... ]
I wasn't sure it was open these days, considering what the town has been up to. When you memories are easily exposed like that, it's not a good time to be very social, is it?
[ it's been a while since their discussion, but in her defense there was a spell making everyone share traumatic memories. so now that it seems the coast is clear again and everything is safe- ]
Hello Akechi. I'm contacting to follow-up on our conversation before. I wanted to reach out sooner, but given the spell that occurred I thought space would be appropriate.
If you feel ready to speak with me or not, please let me know.
That's very considerate of you, Zelda-san. To be honest, I don't think I would have been in the right mind to talk much, immediately following those circumstances. However, I do believe now would be a good time.
[ What a great morning it is! It may be made slightly less great by the fact that Akechi will suddenly find his suitcase missing. Yes, that one, with the A on it, along with anything else that might have been inside. It's as if it's vanished without a trace...
Mysterious, huh?!? Maybe he can ask his roommate about it. ]
Good afternoon. Several weeks ago you expressed interest in adopting one of the kittens from my cat Pearl's litter; if that interest still holds, please let me know, as I believe the kittens are now old enough to leave their mother and find their way to their new homes.
I would attach a picture if I had the functionality, but suffice to say they're all various patterns of black and white, and most of them have would up with black patches on their faces that rather resemble a mask.
[The first night, Akira wrote it off as a bad dream.
There was certainly something unsettling about the way Akechi walked off into the woods, all alone and without stopping, but it's not like it meant anything. Bad dreams came to him sometimes, and compared to some of them, this really wasn't so bad. And Akechi was there at the cafe the next day, as always, so all was well.
The second night, he told himself it was coincidence. The ice palace had been trying for both him and Akechi, especially given Akechi's initial rejection of him while cursed. It made sense that he might have two similar dreams in a row while feeling so uneasy.
The third and fourth nights, it was clear to Akira that this was going to be a recurring dream. But he told himself he could handle it, that he didn't have to make this anyone else's problem. It still didn't mean anything, even as Akechi walked further and further into the woods...
The fifth night, covered with sweat and only an inch short of panicking, Akira throws himself out of bed and opens his laptop, jamming hard on the touchpad to open up his messages.
Hey, Akechi. You there?
Of course, it's the middle of the night, so he most likely isn't. Akira gives it a few minutes, heart thumping wildly in his chest, before he knows he won't be responding.
He's asleep. That's all. He's not gone. He's just asleep.
Akira tries to tell himself that. He even lays back down for a moment. But he can't banish the terrified feeling from his dream as he watched Akechi walk further and further into the gloom...
It's not even half an hour later that he's managed to make it to Akechi's windowsill, tapping on the glass, peering inside for signs of life. He could have gone to the front door, but he doesn't want to wake Lupin and freak him out.
So he'll just freak Akechi out instead. If he's even in there...]
[ It's not Akira's tapping that wakes him up, but rather, the cat, who springs up from his spot at the very foot of the bed to stare at the window. Eventually, Prince crosses over for a closer look, climbing over and unceremoniously stepping on Akechi with little to no regard for his owner's sleep, as expected from cats. ]
Prince...? [ He drawls out, still in a half asleep stupor. ] What's the matter...?
[ And as he tries to blink himself awake, his eyes follow after the cat, and move on to the window, where he catches sight of... someone. It's dark out, so it's only a sillhouette, but it looks an awful lot like-- ]
... Akira?
[ What the hell is Akira doing outside his window in the middle of the night, why did he not use the door like a normal person, why... There's so many questions bubbling up in his mind, but he figures he'snot getting any answers until they get to talk. So he drags himself to his feet, grabs a blanket and heads over to the window, pulling it open. ]
What are you doing outside at this hour? You're going to catch a cold...
[ it's early this morning that Lupin makes a peculiar discovery - peculiar, but oddly comforting, even if it makes him uneasy on a separate level. Whenever Akechi wakes up in the morning, he'll find Lupin seated at the kitchen table with his laptop in front of him - and something else in front of tha. There's a square pictureframe in his lap. He offers a little wave, looking a little puzzled, but with a small smile nonetheless. ]
Morning. The town's decided to give us presents, I think.
[ Although that might be because he's just mow waking up, and hasn't had the chance to look anywhere else in the house-- there wasn't anything new in his own room, last he checked.
Still, he can't help but notice the picture frame in Lupin's lap, and figures that must be what he's talking about. Curious though he is, he'll wait until Lupin himself decides to show him, although he does move closer to take a seat beside him. ]
Are you sure it's not a reward for a quest? Did you ring the bell in the woods and make a wish, perhaps?
[It seems his wish was granted - Akira wakes to find a small map, slipped under his door somewhere in the night. The map is of town, and has an X marking the spot of a good treasure, he hopes.
And so he had messaged Akechi, asking him if he was ready for a treasure hunt. Soon enough, he's over at his and Lupin's house, waiting for him outside, dressed in his hoodie and ridiculous heart sweater.
He has the map out ready for inspection when Akechi joins him.]
[ The message had been a pleasant surprise, though Akechi had to wonder what Akira was up to this time-- as far as he recalled, they hadn't made any challenges like the time the moon was "stolen". Maybe it was just another flight of whimsy? Whatever it was, he was happy to indulge.
So he meets his boyfriend outside, wearing his own checkered sweater vest and a smile that, while fond, is trying very hard not to laugh; Akira's choice of attire is as ridiculous as he remembers, though it does evoke some... delightful memories, from the last time Akechi saw him wearing that. ]
Ah, thieves and their maps. [ A playful roll of eyes and he moves closer to inspect the map. It seems to be the town this time, so hopefully no dangerous incursions into the woods will be needed this time. ] Where did you find this?
[He'd known Akechi would need some time after everything, but Akira couldn't help worrying every day they were apart. Was Akechi okay? Did he hate him, and want to break up? Did he need comforting, after everything that happened, from someone other than Akira?
He resisted the urge to ask these questions, instead waiting patiently for a few days. And then, around the time Mr. F was sure to release new quests soon, Akira sent a simple message.
Hey. Can we talk?
And so now he stands, at the edge of the forest (which is alarmingly closer than it was before), waiting for Akechi to come meet him. Thinking surely they can clear all this up, if they're just open with each other. That their relationship isn't about to crash and burn...]
[ Were Akira to voice those concerns out loud, then all Akechi could tell him for sure was that no, he didn't hate him-- at least not any more than that jealous, jealous side of him naturally (thought he) did, anyway. But as for everything else... those were all still left in the open.
He couldn't keep running away forever, though. And once he gets a message from Akira, he realizes the time to face reality has finally come. ]
Hey.
[ And hopefully, reality won't be half as bed as his anxiety-ridden fears. ]
[They’d arrived together, but separated for a bit, chatting and socializing. Goro is a little better at it, or at least his persona is, mingling with the town’s citizens.
But now, as the moon rises, Akira detaches himself from his latest conversation partner. Before long, Goro will feel a tap on his shoulder, a hand raised to him when he turns.]
[ The socializing was done not just as a means to reinforce his act as a perfect boy, but surprisingly, this time it was done because... he wanted to. It was strange, but for as long as he's been in this town, he's figured the people he's met have all been vastly different from his personal network back in Tokyo. Different... in a good way, he has to admit.
(Besides, Caramia always puts so much effort into this, Akechi feels like properly enjoying the party is the least he can do to make him happy.) ]
I was starting to think you would never ask.
[ Still, when Akira invites him to a dance, he gladly calls it a night for his social affairs, and indulges in the company of the one person he enjoys the most.
With a smile, he takes Akira's hand in his, pulls him closer in a loose embrace. ]
Not a competition this time, though? I wonder if you're growing soft.
[Akira's only thought as he was dragged into the darkness was that Akechi wasn't going to be happy about this.
There's not much he can do about it now, though. He's quite literally rooted to the spot, his feet twisted and woody as they dig into the dirt. His legs have merged together, his torso elongating so that now he's almost eight feet tall, and threatening to grow taller. His chest, arms, and head are still human, and the meld from his flesh into the tree bark growing over his pelvis makes his stomach lurch.
[ Alas, Akira's would-be rescuer might be in need of rescuing, himself.
The curse has yet to strike him in full, having taken over the entirety of his left arm and the corresponding thigh, along with part of his hips and, oddly enough, his hair; at least the latter is no more than an aesthetic change, though the ever falling leaves almost give him a glimpse of what he might be like, if he looked more like his wretched father than he does.
Still, it's... disturbing, and as much as he's trying to stay level-headed, he can't help but feel panic rise every time he hears a snap, unable to figure out whether it's an ordinary twig in the woods or his own bones-- at least until he feels it, anyway. It's started to reach down to his foot, and sometimes the roots try to seek purchase on the ground, but he keeps moving out of sheer willpower, pushing and pulling and snagging his own skin turned vine; the deep red sap and the pain aren't as easy to ignore, but he powers through, decided to make his way back to town, or get help, or find-- ]
